Before the oil priced up greatly that made the Philippine government call for a conversion of public utility jeepneys from using diesel gasoline to Liquefied Petroleum Gas, some had already launched it and is now leading the way to converts.
It started way back in 2006, when a jeepney assembler in Quezon City began producing trial products running on liquefied petroleum gas. By 2007, a fleet owner in Rizal done same thing to one of his jeepneys then two weeks later, the Makati Jeepney Operators and Drivers Alliance (MJODA) formally announced that conversion of diesel-to-LPG to 300 jeepneys will occur.
“Jeepneys run by LPG gas have been around for some time but doesn’t make a loud headline when they hit the road,” says MJODA founder Orlander Marquez on June 20, when his group signed an agreement with various LPG fuel owners and engine suppliers and service centers.
David Motor’s Ricardo David, one of MJODA’s partners, started studying conversion of LPG last 2004. By 2006, he already made the 18-seater jeepneys run by a cheaper and cleaner fuel which is the LPG. “My target was just to decrease the air pollution caused by jeepneys,” David said, “when we visited Japan in 1969, the taxi there were already run by LPG”.
David’s endeavor and effort deserves praises for not only did it help the Filipino community from today’s soaring oil prices but it also contributes to our environment especially that we are under Global Warming.
Jeepney, counted 230,000 as of today nationwide, is the greatest consumer of oil and also a great contributor to air pollution that is why conversion is a great idea to help our country.
