WAKING UP TO SEE THE BLUE SKY

UNEDITED SAMPLE LITERARY ARTICLE
By Venus Dimaculangan Banaag
IV - Isaac Newton

It seems like it was only yesterday when that girl was just an only child. Her parents gave her everything she needed even if she’s not asking for it. She was studying at a great school and had good grades and the best of friends there. Good grades, everything you need plus a little luxury, good grades, great friends and happy family… what more can a girl ask for? She was very contented with her life.

All of the people around her loved her. When she goes to their province, she was very much welcomed. The same goes when she’s at school. She had a number of admirers, had a few achievements and great friends. When having social gatherings, she was very eye-catching. Of course, that was probably because her parents had many friends and they’d always ask of their daughter. She would often hear her parents’ friends say, “Ay, ang ganda naman ng anak mo. Matalino pa.” They all think she’s a perfect girl living the perfect life.

But I guess the ideal life won’t just stay there. Things started to fall apart. Her parents started fighting frequently. Her mom scolded her often even if she did nothing which resulted to their arguments every once in a while. At first, all she could do was cry. But then, she started hating. She rebelled. Unknowingly, she started ruining her whole life.

She hated everything. She didn’t respect her mom anymore. About her grades? She didn’t care even a bit. She lived life at the fast lane. Spending her allowance on useless things, disobeying whatever her mom says, answering back to her elders, she even almost got kicked out from school. She was nothing like the perfect girl before.

And then, the worst happened. Her parents separated. Truths that were hidden before popped out in the open. Her perfect life was not so perfect after all. It turns out, she had 3 older siblings. Two kuyas and one ate. She’s living with her mom now and the arguments didn’t stop. But as time passed by, they got along.

Having her parents separated wasn’t easy. She cried every night. Luckily, she had people at her back through it all. Her true friends never left her side and this one boy was always there to keep a smile on her face.

This one boy was unlike the others she met before. He’s kind off a show-off and he's sometimes immature but when they’re alone, he’s quiet and sweet. He’s not fond of saying what he feels and this silence was very new to the girl. She just guesses what he feels and her guesses were right most of the time. With him, she stopped rebelling against her mom. He put her life back on the right track. He may not know it but he changed her.

Sadly, they’re not together anymore. He left her in the end but that’s alright. He will always be a big part of her life. Now, she’s just a girl living her life. Her mom and her are getting along pretty well, she’s got a handful of true friends, she sees her dad every once in a while and she’s got the siblings she always wanted.

She went through a lot of things and she’s learned a lot. Before, when she had the ideal life, she was weak. That’s why when the rain started to fall, she wasn’t able to handle it well. But now, she knows how to handle things better. Now, she’s just a normal girl living the normal life. Yes, she lost the boy who fixed her life, but at her age, a love life is just a luxury. You can just have it later. What’s important now is that her life was fixed.

She may not have continued living the perfect life she had before but I know she’s a hell lot happier now. I know that in the end, she was happy with the life she lived although at some point, she almost got broken. That girl is now moving forward, trying to weave a great future ahead of her. That girl is thankful for the blue sky that God gives her everyday. Trust me, I know. That girl is me.
