IV - Michael Faraday
This novel written by the famous author, Erich Segal, has really touched my heart. While reading this, I felt all the emotions the author wanted to convey and the passion between the two main characters is truly amazing. They truly have a love that transcends everything even death itself.
When destiny decides to play with the fate of Jenny Cavilleri and Oliver Barrett, both their lives are changed completely. Jenny and Oliver are two very different people destined to be with one another. Jenny was from Radcliffe while Oliver was from Harvard. She liked music while he loved hockey. She had no social life whatsoever while he was a jock. She was not that wealthy while he was very rich. But despite these differences, they still chose to be with each other and fight for their love.
Their love was a typical one, one wherein one side of the parents would approve of their relationship while the other strongly opposed to it. On their case, it was Oliver’s parents, specifically his father, who disapprove of their love. But even though his parents didn’t allow of their relationship and even threatened him to take away all his luxuries, he still chose to be with the love of his life. After some time, Oliver finally decided to bind their relationship and make it legal through a marriage. Although both of them were still in college, they both agreed to marry one another even though they know it would be very difficult.
During the period of their marriage, they experienced a lot of hardships and struggles. Regardless of these hardships, they were both happy to be with one another forever, or so they thought. During the time when they were financially stable, there was a time that they wanted to have children of their own. They tried but it seemed that there was a problem so they decided to consult a doctor to know if there were any problems with either one of them. When they went to the doctor, he conducted some tests and he seemed hesitant about the results. So the doctor decided to do another set of test and he found out that something was really wrong, terribly wrong. He had learned that Jenny had cancer and it was in the worst stage. He first discussed it with Oliver and he was terribly shocked about it. He had never anticipated something like this to happen, and it had to happen when they were finally able to have a more comfortable life. As the days pass by, Oliver observed the effects of the illness in Jenny’s body but he did not dare say this to his wife. She was gradually decreasing weight and her appearance seemed to be worst. She finally realized that something was wrong with her and she demanded that the doctor tell her what is wrong. The doctor told her everything and she told this to Oliver not knowing that he had known this problem for quite some time. After that, Oliver wanted to do a lot of things for Jenny. He wanted to take her to Paris and give her whatever her heart desires but she did not accept this. She turned down all his offers and chose to stay where they live and live her life like a normal one. But the illness was inevitable and there came a time when their home would be the hospital. There came a point when Oliver had to ask the help of his father to save Jenny. His father was unaware of what was happening and so he did not give the help Oliver needed.
Jenny eventually died in the arms of her beloved Oliver. She had him promise her that he would move on and live his life. Although this was very hard for Oliver, the only thing he could do was agree to his wife’s wish. He held her in his arms and lay there like there was no tomorrow.
Oliver’s father finally learned of what happened and was very sorry about this. He told Oliver that he should have explained it to him earlier so that he could have helped him. But all Oliver could think was his wife’s words: “Love never means having to say you’re sorry”, and after that he cried.
