JUST ONCE

UNEDITED SAMPLE LITERARY ARTICLE

Maybe someday, I’ll learn how to give up and to let go. But for now, I still can’t do so. Even in the hardest part of my life, I didn’t imagine of making a distance, getting farther and farther away from you. It seems like there is always a magnet which pulls me over. Why can’t I stop thinking? Why can’t I stop loving?

I’ll close my eyes and from this moment on, I’ll make sure of my every step. Though it is really hard to find a way closer to your heart, I still wish I could fulfill all your needs. Not that mother- type, rather, the one who would give you love, happiness and care, always. I wish I was the girl in your dreams. And as I suppose all these things, I feel the presence of imbecility. The vivid feeling of uncertainty suddenly crept up into my system. I was shocked for the moment I opened my eyes, a huge question blocked up my mind, Why did I think of such things? I should have not imagined. I felt like crying without someone to wipe my tears off. My dreams shattered into pieces as if they would never be whole again.

You were once a spy because everything I know, everything I hear, you know, you hear. You were once my shield as you fight for what you believe is right for me. You once brought extreme happiness into my life. You were once at the top of it. And I realized, all of those were meant to happen just for once. Now, I can’t find you anymore. I can’t feel what I felt before. I can’t see how you are right now and after all, I have figure out that everything happened just for one reason, and that is, for me to learn and to accept that not all are persisting. It can only happen once, not twice nor thrice.

I remembered all the things we’ve shared. I enjoyed your company and I thank you for coming. I would always treasure our friendship and all the days that we have gone through even though it all started with a never meant appealing joke, ‘I like you”. My tears abruptly fell and followed the path you traveled. I can’t see them falling but I can feel them coming. I can’t help but to think why you left me this way. I can’t blame anyone else because you are the only one who could raise me up again.

Unexpected, at a glance outside the windows, I saw someone, standing all alone, looking up to the sky. I thought it was you visiting so I excitedly opened the door. But as I do so, I didn’t find you waiting. I thought it was you but it seemed like you would never do that again for me. No more. And so I knew that all these things did never exist. They are all illusions. You would not do that, anyway. I know I am not that special. Perhaps, I came up to that idea because I cannot escape from my deep longing. I miss you a lot and now, I beg you to come back.

MY FOUNDATION, MY ALMA MATER

I am proud to say that I am a product of my Alma Matter. My Alma Matter that molded me to who am I today. My Alma Matter who taught me priceless knowledge about the uncertainties of life. My Alma Matter who loved me so dearly, that I can say that he is the best Alma Matter in the whole world.

He has been my mentor for nearly seven years. He was a mentor who taught me the basic foundation of learning. Starting from letters to paragraphs and numbers to equations. He also instilled in me the true value of responsibility. At a young age I, as one of his students, learned to love God above all. He really is a perfect Alma Matter.

During my first year of stay in your custody, you taught me lessons that will remain in my heart and mind no matter what. You imparted to me the value of putting God in priority above all. You taught me to let God be the center of my life. On the other hand, you did not totally focus on academics hence you focused on developing my, together with my schoolmates, total well-being as a person.

During the next years, you instilled the true value of “servant-leadership”. You taught us that you can’t be a leader if you, yourself, can’t be a servant. You taught us the value of serving others first rather than being able to lead immediately. Through this, I learned the value of true leadership. I salute you, my Alma Matter, for this

As years passed by, your lessons broadened up. You elaborated the connection of servant-leadership and other kinds of values. You really taught me a lot of lesson. As I spent my last year in your arms before I graduated from elementary, I reminisced the times you taught me and introduced me to the real world. A world that is full of challenges. A world that is full of excitement. A world that is full of knowledge I still need to learn.

My Alma Matter, Saint John Bosco, Don Bosco, Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati, I’m proud to be your product. I’ll never forget the things I learned from you. I will carry it until I grow old. I’ll remember all the memories we have shared. Thank you for everything. Hail Don Bosco, my Alma Matter Dear! Hail Don Bosco, our joyful voices hear!

MY LIFELONG FRIEND

I can hardly remember the day when you first entered the scenario of my life. You have been with me from the very moment I had been aware of my surroundings. You have been with me from the very moment I gained the gift of wisdom from Above. You have been a friend and I guess, the “best” friend among my true friends. You have been with me through thick and thin. You always make me smile whenever I need to. And though you sometimes make me sad, it is not important. For what is important is you make my time worthwhile in a sense that you have been always there for me. You really are a friend indeed.

I remember one time when I failed a test. It really made my day sad. But, just like you always do, you were there to change my mood and make me smile, without me even noticing that my grief and sadness was already gone. You traveled with me through endless journeys. You stayed with me in solving problems that ruin my life. You have given me a positive glimpse to the human world.

You guide me to the right path I should take, always. You make my entire being complete or should I say not hard to handle. You always complete my day. Living without you in this mortal world would be a burden for me. You know me well more than any other person in this world. You are a part of me.

You are my IMAGINATION. Thank you for staying with me all this time. We will still share lots of moments, right? Thank you for being a part of me. We’ll be friends forever.

FRIEND, I LOVE YOU

Back then, I was so ignorant. Never thought that besides the things I have, there are still many other things that exist. My life then was so orderly, so painless. That’s what I’ve chosen. But now, I’ve learned that life is more than just living it. Live to love. That’s all. For me, life may be beyond human comprehension, but still, there are many things to learn, many experiences to learn from, many accomplishments yet to be achieved. As I grew up, I felt a sudden hunger for learning, an eagerness to know the things I do not know yet. I’ve learned of sadness, grief, sorrow, of many other things and, of love. I sometimes wish I could unlearn them all. But by being sad and hurt, I felt how it is to be truly happy.

Each day of my life, I gain more and more friends including you. You became a part of my life and I as part of yours. I’ve known you for such a long time. I share you all my secrets and confide in you. You were always there when I needed you. And then one day I realized that it’s you… You are that one thing I’ve been wishing for to have. I don’t know what it is, but I think it’s your captivating charms that made me fall for you. Everyday, it gets harder for me. I don’t know if we could still be friends and lovers at the same time. Is it really worth risking our friendship? I don’t know. I wanted to hold your hand but you’re not willing to stay. It tore my whole being apart. I was overwhelmed by sadness because of the fact that you love somebody else now. I was saddened by the thought that there would be a whole part of me which I won’t be able to share with you.

You may see me laughing, but would you know that inside, I’m dying? I just don’t want you to see me cry, because you’ve never known me for being like that. But the moment I saw you together, all my hopes turned into shambles. You’ve turned my heart numb. No. Not yet. I’m just trying to ignore the pain but still, it hurts. I owe many things to you. Most of the things I know of love, I’ve known because I loved you.

Yes. I’m sill that bitter-sweet kind of girl you used to know. I am still that someone who laughs with you, makes fun of everything and expresses how she feels. Though I’m in love with you, I am still your friend, nothing will change. I remember the day you asked me if I could be your friend forever. Of course, I’d love to. Asking me that question meant so much to me. It is a proof that you really love me. You really wanted me to be your friend. So, I’ll be true to that promise. We’ll take our friendship beyond forever. Our story may not have a happy ending but at least we’ll end up being good friends. This time, I’m letting you go, for love is meant to be free. Because someday, somehow, I’ll learn to love you back, learn to love you just the way you love me. One day, I’ll love you as a friend… Maybe, just as a friend.

BLOG, BLOGGER, BLOGGING: TEACHING AND LEARNING JOURNALISM AND PRINT MEDIA THROUGH BLOGS

UNEDITED SAMPLE FEATURE ARTICLE
By Vicson Aypa Mabanglo
IV-Sir Isaac Newton

Blogs, formally “weblogs”, are now usual in the Internet environment. In 1997 Jorn Barger coined the word Weblog to describe a site that combined links, commentaries, personal thoughts, journals made up of chronological entries and essays. A blog can publish texts and images to the web in an instant without any sophisticated technical knowledge. Blogs have provided people to present and express themselves online.

The collective community of all blogs is known as the “blogosphere” (Wikipedia, 2008). Large part of the community is made up of adolescents (Huffucker, 2004). A visit to the statistics page of Livejournal.com indicates that adolescents, mostly ranging from 17 to 24 years of age, are responsible for the high population of bloggers. Since blogs seem so popular with the youth, it is hard to ignore the implication that it can be use for educational technology. Blogging is about, first, reading. But more important, it is about reading what interests you. Blogs, nowadays, serves as the portfolios and online journals of the youth, students.

Weblogs are great tools for learning. Either an individual or a group can make Blogs. Blogs promote self-expression and creativity. No wonder, blogs nowadays are used for educational purposes. Blogs are reshaping our environment. They provide a communication space that teachers can utilize with students whenever there is a curriculum need to develop writing, share ideas and reflect on work being undertaken in the classroom (Peter Scott, Internet Librarian 2001). Blogging requires teachers to teach students to critically engage media. It is the “virtual extension of the classroom”. It allows the student to gain information through the most influential form of mass media today, the Internet.

According to Edublog, a community of bloggers that host a number of blogs for teachers and students, blogs provide a space for sharing opinions and learning in order to grow communities of discourse and knowledge — a space where students and teachers can learn from each other. Blogs help learners to see knowledge as interconnected as opposed to a set of discrete facts. They can give students a totally new perspective on the true meaning of one’s point of view. They foster ownership and choice. Blogging provides the possibility of connecting with experts on the topic students are writing. The interactive nature of blogging creates enthusiasm for writing and communication. Blogging engages students in conversation and learning. Blogging provides the opportunity for students to learn and to write for life-long learning. Blogging affords teachers the opportunity to teach responsible public writing. (Edublog, 2008)

Not surprisingly, blogging, has been viewed as a public form of journalism, giving anyone who wishes the opportunity to comment on events of the day. As of now, different schools and universities internationally, are offering added courses in blogging to their curricula. One of the first universities who added blogging as a course is the University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Communication. A teacher at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in New Jersey, known as Professor Richardson, uses blogs for both his journalism and literature class too. In his journalism class, students collect news stories to write about and then edit each other’s work. In his literature class, students comment and critique class readings. For Richardson, blogs allow his students to be more aware of their writing and their audience (Kennedy, 2003) (Huffucker, 2004).

A teacher from Makati Science High School in the Philippines applies almost the same technique as Richardson’s. Mr. Alixander Haban Escote is a high school teacher and adviser of The Makati Science Vision, which is one of the best school newspapers in the Philippines. He maintains four blogs and uses these blogs to interact and teach his students. He uses the blogs to publish quizzes and other written activities. He also uses the blogs to display and publish articles of his students. He uses the blogs as tools to enhance his student not only grammatically but also socially through commenting on other’s works that were published on the same blog.

Wilfredo Basa Fang, one of his students, stated, “The blogs let us, Journalism and Print Media students, to be updated instantly. And at the same time, we can have our lessons from this blog and search more related examples in the web.”

Blogging really enhances one’s capability of doing a certain task. It strengthens one’s focus in learning new things from what he is doing.

“I can say that the information and other announcements are easily accessed and can be read or known in just a click. Its easier than the copy-in-the-manila-paper tradition.” said Marie Juliebeth Monge, also one of his students, supporting the idea of using blogs in education.

The blogosphere has really given rise to what is sometimes referred to as “citizen journalism” where a blogger can assume the role of a journalist by giving his or her views on issues and concerns. It must be stressed that not all blogs can be considered journalistic outputs, in the same way that not all bloggers are journalists ( Arao, 2006, p.3).

Through blogs, people can communicate. Through blogs, people can express their thoughts freely. Through blogs, people can learn. Through blogs, people can teach.

MY EVER DEAREST GRANDMOTHER

UNEDITED SAMPLE LITERARY ARTICLE
By Maria Denise Glipo Basallote
IV-Sir Isaac Newton

When I first saw the very whole of you, I already felt that an incredibly big responsibility will be given on me. As I stepped on the cement floor that you had been standing for almost 20 years, I also thought you were really the foundation of all the children and parents that were ‘living’ here. By that time, I was just once an elementary student who wanted to be your grandchild and you as my dearest grandmother. But in order for me to achieve that dream, I must be first put into a test.

I did not realize that time really flies quickly. I did not even recognize that I was already one of the hundreds of your grandchildren. I was already part of your huge family by then and it really made me feel fulfilled and jovial.

I took my first year there with remarkable memories and happenings. I was then belonged to the family of Galileo. Galileo is indeed a very loving and affectionate foster father. We were 34 all in all in our little ‘house’, but because one of my siblings migrated to America (of course, she already asked Father Galileo for permission), we were just 33 when the time came that we needed to split apart. Even though our house was full of distinctive faces, characters and individualities, I effortlessly adjusted to my new ‘siblings’ because they were a total fun and very supportive to me and to my other siblings. Although sometimes we had heated arguments or discrete points of view about a certain thing, without difficulty, it was resolved because we made it to the point that it must be talked first in our most patient and calmer way than having an argument full of shouting and yelling. But having a family like this is not like holding it forever. We ended up saying farewell with one another because it was not a goodbye, only a new beginning for all of us.

Another year had started. After my family in Galileo, I went to the family of Hooke in my second year. Some of my siblings were retained there and I was very happy to see them because I observed that almost all of us had grown quickly. Different faces and personas were again introduced to me. Father Hooke was just as supportive and warm as Father Galileo so I did not have the problem interacting with him. Like in my first family, another two of my siblings migrated to another country, so we were only 32 by that time. We did have a strong bonding and exciting experiences that made us all feel dedicated with each other. However, as I said before, not all families lived a happily ever after. A powerful storm hit all of us that almost caused our well-built friendship be destroyed. Our family was divided into two (obviously, except for Father Hooke) and it lasted for almost 2 months. But good really takes over the evil. Finally, we could not take it anymore that we ended up saying sorry with one another and we said that we must leave it in the past and start a new beginning without anymore concerns about it. So the result, our year ended well and we were so fortunate that the storm that hit us had finished without any sad mark.

I was already in third year but I could not genuinely believe that I survived living in your house. Although I managed to study, to have friends and to experience new adventures, I still have the doubt if I was going to deal with it smoothly. My new family did have a weird name. It was called Lavoisier. We call our foster father, “Father Lavo”. He was kind of a strict father but he was so sweet and comfortable to be with. Almost all my siblings were new to me so I had a hard time coping up with those people. On the contrary, I think, this was the first time that I did not encounter any problems concerning the personalities on the people that were surrounding us. Our year had surpassed all the sufferings and miseries that we got through from our educators. But that does not mean that we blame our teachers for all the afflictions that we got, instead, we were thanking them for all of the information and lessons we were learning from them. I was so gratified that I belonged to this family because they were such a great looking people and very optimistic. We also enjoyed each other’s company that our friendship really bloomed that made Father Lavo truly ecstatic. It seemed that we were at ease with each other by then that when the time came that we must leave our third year, we were sad but also happy because significant reminiscences were our treasure as the year went by.

Now, I am in my fourth year term. Fermi’s family is where I belong now. I am with my new siblings and I hope that we will be in good terms for the rest of the year. Actually, I do not want to think that by the end of the year, this will be the last family where I am going to. I am wishing that I may have another year with you. But I know that it is not going to be true. At least, I wished.

For almost four years of my life as a student, I dedicate this special treasure on you, and I am afraid to accept that this will be the end of staying with you. I had dreamt of being one of your grandchildren and fortunately, it had come true. I am so contented that I made this very far with you through thick and thin, joy and pain, sadness and happiness. I am also satisfied and glad that I shared with you my secrets, my problems about my family and friends, my happiness about passing an exam, my sorrow about my friend’s departure, my gossip sessions about boys, and of course, my wonderful moments that happened here. I know that you will be replaced by another grandmother in some other time and you will all leave us, but in my heart and deep in my soul, you will always be my old grandmother that I used to know. You will always be my grandmother, my dearest grandmother…Makati Science High School.

DENIED OF THE TRUTH

UNEDITED SAMPLE SPORTS ARTICLE
By Marian Denise Glipo Basallote
IV-Madame Marie Curie

He is a top-rated in-ring fighter. He surely possesses great skills. He has defeated many remarkable names. He was supposed to come out of octagon as a champion that night. But, fate decided not to give him the taste of success.

Brandon Michael “The Truth” Vera, a former top heavyweight contender, began his career in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) with eight consecutive victories. However, he still lacked experience, among other things, which gave him his first loss to Tim Sylvia. After experiencing a disappointing loss, he eventually built up his confidence and was determined to win his next bout and the championship. At UFC 85, on June 7, Vera had his chance of proving his worth to Fabricio Werdum.

The fight between Vera and Werdum was intense. Each man was determined to come out of the arena with the belt on his waist. You could see the fire in their eyes and just like a strike of lightning, they were already grappling in the middle of the arena. Werdum was raining down punches, but when the referee stepped in to stop the fight with just 20 seconds remaining in the round, Vera vehemently protested.

Tension suddenly filled the room as Vera realized what had just happened. It suddenly came to his realization that his belt was already gone. The referee had abruptly and unjustly stopped the match. Vera could have well fought off Werdum for he had the strength. He was trying to escape the grasp of his enemy when he suddenly heard the bell ring. It signaled the end of the fight. It was a fight that ended in a controversial fashion.

A frustrated Vera could not accept this kind of defeat. He thought everything was treated unfairly. He firmly believed that the referee had no valid reason of halting the fight for he neither tapped out nor had his face stained with blood. He thirsted for a rematch. He thirsted for vengeance.

Vera is scheduled to make his light-heavyweight debut against former International Fight League fighter (IFL) and UFC newcomer Reese Andy at UFC Fight Night 14. UFC Fight Night 14 will feature a main event between UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and James Irvin in a non-title light-heavyweight bout. The event goes head-to-head with "Affliction: Banned."

LEGACY OF NEW LEGENDS

UNEDITED SAMPLE SPORTS ARTICLKE
By Jose Mari Hall Lanuza
IV-Enrico Fermi

Three veterans. Six games. One championship.

This NBA season was filled with many controversies, like superstar trades, trash talk between all-stars, and many coaching flaws. But one of the issues that rocked the industry was the blockbuster trade between the Boston Celtics, the Minnesota Timber wolves and the Seattle Supersonics during summer. This gave way to the monster team-up of all-star veterans now called the Boston Big Three. They are Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. They were three superstar veterans, all hungry for their first ever NBA title. Last June 18, their dream came true.

After a shocking seven-game first and second round playoff series, the Boston Celtics, led by the Big Three, won the conference championships in six games against another Eastern Conference contender, the Detroit Pistons. The Celtics headed on to the Finals against the team of the season MVP Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers. In game six of the best of seven series, the Celtics, with a 3-2 lead, took the Lakers back to the Boston Garden, confident that they would win. And despite the efforts of MVP Kobe Bryant, the Celtics were simply too big of an obstacle. The plays made by Kobe were simply no match for all-star Paul Pierce, who led the Celtics to their 17th championship.

Pierce had help in annihilating the Western Conference champions, in the form of his teammates and co-Big Three, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Both superstars scored 25 points in the last game. Their loss in game 5 fueled the Celtics to play even better than last time. They put up a better performance in the Finals than in the earlier rounds of the playoffs where they needed all seven games to win the series.

In this post-season, many people became unsure of the Celtics’ ability to win a championship, mainly because of the show they put up earlier in the playoffs. They doubted whether the Big Three can perform on the same level as they did during the regular season, setting the bar in the league with 63 wins. After all, the playoffs is a different stage than the regular season.

It was evident during the entire post-season that the Big Three were not as mighty as they were in the regular season. Allen had problems with his shooting, and Kevin Garnett took the role of the leader earlier in the playoffs. But when the Finals came, it was Paul Pierce’s time to shine. He led the Celtics to the title, paved the way for his teammates, and made the season MVP look like a rookie. He scored 17 points in their game six triumph, and he averaged 21.8 points in the Finals. It was definitely a unanimous choice for the management to make Pierce the Finals MVP.

Just a season ago, the Boston Celtics were a 24-win team. They were on the bottom of the food chain in the NBA. They were simply hopeless. But all that changed when Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen came to Boston. In just a span of one year, they simply changed. From being the loser team to becoming the team that everyone wants to beat. This trio of superstars ended the 22-year championship drought of Boston, by giving the Lakers a humiliating 131-92 loss on June 18, winning the NBA title in the process.
All of the three major superstars of the Boston Celtics have never won a championship before. All of them were great, but they lacked something. Each of their former teams had no future. So when the new Boston roster was assembled, everyone knew that this Boston team was nothing like the old one. What’s the proof? The 2007-2008 championship banner, hanging on the ceiling of the Boston Garden.

This trio of superstars never knew how to get a title on their own. They never knew what it felt like, to touch the trophy, to have great teammates. They were deprived of the luxury championships brought. They never even dreamed of this great team. They were simply great players in the shadows of teams that have been champions before.

Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce never knew what it took to become NBA champions. That was back then. You want to know how to become champions? Ask them, they surely know now.

ANOTHER CHAPTER IN THE MOST TALKED ABOUT UAAP

UNEDITED SAMPLE SPORTS ARTICLE
By Jezel Christine Nolasco Quevada
IV-Madame Marie Curie

Sports are being promoted in almost all universities in our country. They are doing to this to make the students well-rounded individuals and not just focused on their studies. It helps them become healthy and besides, sports is one way of defocusing from stress in their studies, building camaraderie among team mates and strong sense of belongingness and loyalty to the school they represent. It is one way of helping them stay away from vices and prohibited drugs. To some, it prepares them on their future professional careers. As a whole, sports contribute to the total development of an individual. Among the universities that compete with each other are the following: University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, University of Santo Tomas, Adamson University, Far Eastern University, National University and University of the East.

Some long-lived rivalries in various sports history are those of DLSU and ADMU, UP and ADMU, the contention of FEU against UE, the rivalry of UP between UST, the enmity of UST and DLSU, the battle of DLSU against FEU. If you happen to wonder where did these rivalries actually start, the answer is the UAAP.

UAAP stands for University Athletic Association of the Philippines. It was established in 1938 as a sport association of eight major universities (stated in the first paragraph of this article) in our country. Each year 15 sports are being competed by these universities. From these sports, rivalries are born. The UAAP is consists of the following braches of sports namely; basketball, chess, beach volleyball, judo, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, cheer dance, baseball, football, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, badminton and fencing. Different member-universities of the association take turns in sponsoring and organizing the annual season.

It was in the year 1924 when the thought of having a sports association, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), came to the mind of Dr. Regino Ylanan, the late UP Physical Education Director. He threw the idea of this project to the universities of UST, DLSU, ADMU and FEU.

In 1930, The University of the Philippines sponsored an experimental meet with the first "BIG 3" league (UST, NU, UP) on basketball, swimming, baseball, relays, track and field, volleyball, tennis and soccer.

In 1935, University of the Philippines was not able to join the event for it had numerous mass intramurals inside the campus. The event was then organized by UST, NU and FEU.

Three years later, the Philippine Amateur Athletic Federation (PAAF), the highest sports body in the country, in cooperation with the UP Alumni Association encouraged the original “BIG 3” including FEU to build and form a permanent sports association. This was the time when the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) was born. Events included were basketball, women's volleyball, baseball, football, swimming and track and field. During that event, UP bagged three titles (volleyball, baseball, track and field), UST ranked 1st in football and swimming while FEU triumphed in basketball.

The season 1941 to 1942 was somewhat hindered due to the outbreak caused by World War II.

In 1946, the UAAP season was sponsored and organized by UST.

During 1952, four new members joined the league namely University of the East, University of Manila, Adamson University and Manila Central University.

In 1954, UE is permanently accepted into the league. The three universities (UM, Adamson, and MCU) were dropped from the UAAP due to their inability to comply with the UAAP requirements.

In 1970, Adamson University tried again to join the league with yet another two-year probationary period.

In 1974, Adamson University hosted the season; from here they became a permanent member of the league.

In 1978, Ateneo de Manila University joins the league and has been accepted. Eight years after, 1986, their rival, De La Salle University joins the league too.

Through the years, the University Athletics Association of the Philippines believes that the true development of an individual does not totally depend on his academic growth hence it depends also in how he involves himself to physical activities and the foundation of camaraderie and sportsmanship.

This year, the association is having its 71st season, which will be sponsored by the University of the Philippines who is celebrating its centennial. The first semester sports starting from the month of July to October includes basketball, chess, beach volleyball, judo, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis and the most awaited cheer dance competition. The second semester, which starts on the month of November and ends in March, includes baseball, football, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, badminton and fencing.

The UAAP craze is about to start again. Even if we are not students of the universities competing in the UAAP, for sure, we will cheer the universities we like best. Hopefully, we will be a part of that event, too. Go UP fighting maroons! Animo La Salle Green Archers! Go Ateneo Blue Eagles! Go UST Growling Tigers! Go Adamson Blue Falcons! Win FEU Tamaraws! Go NU Bulldogs! You can do it UE Red Warriors! Go for the gold and bring home the bacon your school is waiting for. Fight! Fight! Fight!

PACQUIAO CLAIMS WBC LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

ENDLESS CHEERS FROM the crowd were heard as Manny Pacquiao knocked out David Diaz in the ninth round of the World Boxing Council lightweight title match at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, June 29.

Pacquiao finished the fight as he punched Diaz in the left jaw and took the title as the new WBC lightweight champion.

During the earlier rounds, Pacquiao had already given his opponent a cut on the bridge of his nose and another above his right eye.

ANOMALY OF THE BRAIN

Have you ever felt familiar to something new? Have you ever felt that you think you have been in that exact same event though it’s just your first time spending it? In short, have you ever experienced deja vu?

Deja vu is an experience where in you feel sure that you have witnessed, done something new. The term deja vu is French and means, literally, "already seen." Those who have experienced the feeling describe it as an overwhelming sense of familiarity with something that shouldn't be familiar at all. The term deja vu was first coined by a French psychic researcher name Emile Boirac in his book L’Avenir des sciences psychiques (The future of Psychic Sciences). Deja vu is often attributed to a dream, although it can also be attributed to something that really happened in the past. There are three types of deja vu according to researchers. The three types are deja vecu deja senti , deja visite (Wikipedia 2008).

The deja vecu refers to a type of deja vu experience involving more than the sense of sight. The sense involves a great amount of detail, sensing that everything is just as it was before and a weird knowledge of what is going to be said or happen next (Wikipedia 2008). Deja vecu is the coomon type of deja vu. Surveys revealed that 70% of the total population had these experiences, usually between ages 15 to 25 (Wikipedia 2008). It is commonly attributed to a mental disorder.

The deja senti is the second type of deja vu. Deja senti is a more complicated one. It happens most of the time to temporal-lobes epileptics. Deja senti is the phenomenon where in it specifies something “already felt”. It is a mere fact and phenomenon that primarily happens exclusively on the mind, mental happening. In this type, a thing makes you remember something that might have or might have not actually happened.

The third type is the deja visite. This experience is less common and involves an uncanny knowledge of a new place. The translation is "already visited." Here one may know his or her way around in a new town or landscape while at the same time knowing that this should not be possible (Wikipedia 2008).

Déjà vu is often subjected to serious psychological and neurophysical disorders. It is an anomaly of the brain. It is a sensation where in an experience is being recalled which is not true or did not actually happened. The strongest disorder you can attribute to déjà vu is the temporal lobe epilepsy. In simpler ways, déjà vu happens when an action done in the present, which should be stored at the short-term memory, goes directly to the long-term memory storage. From here, it causes the feeling and sensation that you have done a certain thing before.

MY TRUE PARADISE

I believe that every person has their own interpretation of the word “Paradise”. Yes, I myself have my own paradise at the back of my mind. Let me share to you my own dream paradise.

For me, I define paradise as a place of contentment and pure happiness. That happiness means living in a world without worries, without sorrows, without grief. I would really like to live in that world. In that world I defined as paradise, there would be no war, just tranquility and pure peace. In my paradise, there would be no hungry children working their hearts out in the cold roads. These children will have a place to stay, a nice warm bed, and a delicious soup waiting for them. Then, these children will have a place they can call home. In my paradise, there will be no teenagers swerving in the streets without a home, without a family, without a friend. These teenagers will develop their potential as citizens. In my paradise, there will be no such thing as poverty and crime.

Everybody will have plenty to eat; their dining tables would be full of scrumptious food that will fill their empty stomachs. Crime would never exist. There would be no one who would dare to do such thing. Everybody would be disciplined. Everybody would consider their neighbors as their own. Strangers would never exist, for the people around them will be considered as friends. That’s the paradise for me, but, unfortunately, it would never happen.

I hope that the generations after mine would fulfill my paradise. Even though I am sleeping soundly in my coffin for the next one hundred years, I would sleep soundly, knowing that my paradise was coming to life slowly but surely.

ALL FOR ONE, ONE FOR ALL

After all the pretending, I was caught by the mere fact that I belong to you and I have no escape. It is final and I can’t resist. I felt so bad when I knew that you are the one I am going to live with, to live by and to live for. I thought I would not be happy but guess who I am right now. I was honed into a better person- a person filled with triumphs, happiness, riches, treasures and success by means of you.

When you entered my life, everything took place in a rush but I think time did not permit us to meet too close. For only a short period of time, we had it all but everyone knows, that time is not enough. By now, I can feel you, I can see you. But something interfered, I realized, I cannot have you anymore. I cannot own you because the moment given to us, that moment when we should have made up everything for everyone, is done and would never be back again.

If there is a will, there is a way, and this is how I believe we would be together. It would not be impossible because our hearts and souls reside in one place. We are bonded as one and would always be a part of us, a part of the whole. Though it was really hard for us to adjust, we were sill able to love each other’s personalities. We were still able to cope up with the unusual environment.

Perhaps this new environment we made is not unusual anymore for this is where we built our friendship. This is where we are comfortable and this is where we find every good thing in our lives. In here, everything is free, everything is for all and everything is love. Up until now, I can see all of us mingling, singing together, laughing and crying. Some are jocund, some are naughty, some are silent and some are clumsy. And I believe all these are the reasons why we are made as one, the reasons why we became so tough and strong that no one could ever break the wall protecting us from absolute coldness ad misunderstandings.

This I will treasure forever and will never sink into oblivion for these memories always bring back the times when we are so happy together. The victory is always within us. Let us always remember that God is up above, heading us towards the goodness and reality that true friendship was never an illusion.

With the company of our most appreciated mother, our adviser, Mrs. Mira M. Alegre, we can stand all the sacrifices. If one cannot handle certain things, we are here every time, just to save and carry him up and so no one is left behind. We will forever be symbolized by that one incredible flower which will continuously blossom and will never shed its petals unless all would cast off at the same time. All for one, one for all. All these are found within us, within our beloved family, within our section, III- Henri Antoine Becquerel, S.Y. 2007- 2008 of Makati Science High School. May our unity be always and forever.

Anime isn’t just an animated cartoon. It can be a source of encouragement and inspiration. Watching Anime can help you through the bad times. It can be the light of your candle which will show you the righteous path to choose.

Have you ever watched the anime Blood +? It’s about an ordinary schoolgirl, Saya, who embarks on a journey together with her allies, family and chevalier, Haji, to get rid of the chiropteran in the world and to rediscover her identity. If there’s ever a thing about that show that stuck to my mind it’s nankurunaisa which means everything is alright.

Life is a roller coaster. It is full of ups and downs. You will never know what will happen next. You just have to go with the trend and do your best to keep up with everything that is happening around you.

According to Epictetus, a greek stoic philosopher in Roman literature, “Only foolish people get upset by events they cannot control.” Life is unpredictable. You’ll never know the next thing that will happen to you. You might win the lottery or get hit by a car. Just remember to take life easy and with caution because you will never know what will happen next.

I know that life can be hard. There are so many impediments hindering us from reaching our goals. Sometimes we have fights with our best friend or a family member. Sometimes our loved one even leaves us unexpectedly engraving a painful mark in our hearts that will be hard to erase. Just remember this, nankurunaisa. There is no obstacle in life that we cannot overcome. There would always be happiness after sadness. Everything will be alright.

FAIRY TALES

UNEDITED SAMPLE LITERARY ARTICLE
By Ma. Lorena Gorpido Sebastian
IV - Albert Einstein

Do you believe in fairy tales? Those “Once upon a time” stories are well-liked especially by children. Those tales are usually read to children before going to bed. Many of those were written in big letters just to occupy large spaces of the pages. Most fairy tale books contain pictures of the main characters of the story. Those fairy tales were really adored by children. However, Once Upon a Time, fairy tales were not really written for children only. In spite of their name, the popular fairy tales usually have very little to do with fairies.

Fairy tales often appear to be one of the ancestor genres to fantasy and readers, reviewers and even sometimes critics often illustrate connections between the two. As we all know, fairy tale is a fictional story that may feature folkloric characters such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, witches, giants, and talking animals, and enchantments, often involving a mind-boggling succession of events. In latter-day phrasing, the term is also used to portray something blessed with unusual happiness, as in "fairy tale ending" (a happy ending), though not all fairy tales end happily. Colloquially, a "fairy tale" can also mean any unbelievable story. In cultures where demons and witches are perceived as real, and the teller and there of a tale see it as having historical actuality, fairy tales may merge into legendary narratives. However, unlike legends and epics, they usually do not contain more than superficial references to religion and actual places, persons, and events; they take place "once upon a time" rather than in actual times.

The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace, because only the literary forms can survive. Still, folklorists have found these forms from every culture over many centuries. Thus the oral fairy tale may have existed for at least that long, although not perhaps recognized as a genre. Fairy tales, and works derived from fairy tales, are still written today. large numbers of literary fairy tales were written in 17th century France, most of the tales which are still told and retold now are far older in origin. Many of the stories were edited and changed as they were written down, removing the darker and more gruesome elements of the stories. The intended audience of the stories has also changed. These resulted to children as audience of these fairy tales.

One of the most popular fairy tales of all times is “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” As everybody knows, the story is about a little princess whose mother died and her stepmother was jealous of her beauty. So she ordered her to be killed. But still, Snow White lived happily ever after at the end of the story. This is how a typical fairy tale goes. At first, the major characters of the story will endure a million of troubles but at the end of it, they will live happily ever after. Although most fairy tales pursue the same outline, people reading it was still entertain.

This is how much people love fairy tale stories.

FRIENDS KEPT THE MUSIC PLAYING

UNEDITED SAMPLE FEATURE ARTICLE
By Jenny Marie Uno Porazo
IV-Enrico Fermi

In my 15 years of existence, I can already say that I already met lots and lots of people. At first, everyone was a stranger. A stranger who has his different race, his different status, his different belief and his different point of view. Some of these strangers became acquaintances, some just passed by, but some of them remained by my side, and I called them by the name “friends.”

These friends of mine made me happy. I found a family in them. When I was alone, they served as my second family, sometimes they may be the first. While we are in school, we always had fun, tears turns to smiles, grief turned to laughter, sadness turned to hope, and that hope turned everything upside down. Then, I remembered a quote I received in my cell phone. “Life is like a smooth playing music, and friends will keep that music playing”. I suddenly realized that my friends are not just shoulders I could cry on, in fact, I realized that they made my day complete. They made every minute worth treasuring. When the music of my life starts to go down, they would not say “I told you so!” They would give me the warmest hug, then, they would caress my hair and tap my back, and they would whisper “Everything will be fine, what are friends for!” Those were the best lines I ever heard, and I think I will not live without hearing those words. I wanted to cry, I always did, but happiness flooded my heart. Even though we had misunderstandings, we would just see ourselves by the riverside, talking things out, then cry, then hug each other. After that, we would be happy again. We would take pictures together and watch the sunset. Even the dirtiest river would be a crystal clear one if we look at it together. Even the most unpleasant sounds from jeepneys would be the most beautiful music we’ll ever hear if we listen to it together. One thing is for sure, the dullest moments in our lives will be the happiest moments we’ll ever have. The hardest problems will just be a piece of cake what we face it altogether.

Truly, God had his best plans! He made this setup for us to meet. My friends really kept the music playing. I lived for fifteen years without them, everything turned out fine. But when I started to meet them, I don’t think I can survive another fifteen years without them by my side!

NOT ALL QUITTERS LOSE

UNEDITED SAMPLE LITERARY ARTICLE
By Monique Garcia Rosario
IV-Albert Einstein

For years, we are taught by people around us to fight, be strong, never lose hope and never quit no matter what. They said that “all quitters lose”. But in real life, I think this is not always true. We have already accepted the perception in “quitting” without looking at its positive view. But, what if quitting will make you successful in your life? What if it’s the only solution to your problem?

It’s very unfair thinking that almost everyone believes that a quitter is a failure and a person with no patience and perseverance. Quitting doesn’t mean that you are too lazy to do that and you are too impatient. In a positive view, quitting is one way of admitting that you’ve had enough. You must stop it because you know that it will make your life miserable.

A quitter can either be a loser or a winner. A loser, if he quits easily without trying and thinks that he can’t do this or that. A winner, when he becomes more contented and a happier person opened up to new possibilities and opportunities.

But, why people don’t quit even it’s almost making their life miserable? Because they are too weak to face the truth thinking that they will be a loser if they quit. They do not know that if you prevent yourself from making your life miserable, you will be opened up to brighter side of your life, turning you into a true person.

You should quit in your wrong doings, bad habits and practices that will just add burden in your life and will make God unhappy. But never quit when you are faced with problems, making you a weak and impatient person. Everything here on earth is just a test given by God.

We always hear the quotation “Winners never quit and Quitters never win”. But in my own experience, I believe that “Quitters sometimes win”.

FEAR NO MORE

Once there was a patient who was heard screaming and seen running away minutes before his operation. Scared and was completely terrified, the patient was asked by one of the nurses to calm down and tell her everything that caused his fear. The patient explained that he heard the assistant nurse inside the Operating Room saying, “Don’t worry. God will help you”. The nurse was very surprised and confused and questioned the nervous patient what was wrong with the other nurse’s statement. The patient replied, “She wasn’t talking to me, she was talking to the doctor!”

All of us have fears. Sometimes, in a more scientific sense, we call them phobias. But what are fears? According to my friend, Mr Webster, fear is an unpleasant, often strong feeling or emotion caused by expectation or awareness of danger. It is something we are afraid to be, afraid to have, afraid to see, afraid to hear, afraid to touch, afraid to smell, or afraid to experience. It is also serves as a warning to a greater threat. It has different kinds, types, sometimes it is caused by various factors and such. But I am not here to talk about the facts concerning fear. I am here to reflect and dig deeper on what is there beyond the thing that makes us worried, alarmed, panicked, and apprehended.

Fears are indeed very natural. For no man has lived fearless of anything, it is undeniably a part of our entire being. However, fears, when pictured to the maximum, will become a glitch in our emotion and mental health. Well, any disorder is abnormal, so in this case fear is not natural. But like I have said, I did not write this just to tell you whether or not a fear is abnormal, or what these mental illnesses are. I really don’t know them. So let us just put aside those “phobias” or should I say “really big phobias” of yours that will cause you to qualify for a very serious mental counseling or something like that. That is critical. And that is different too because what I am referring here is something that we are experiencing in our everyday lives, “natural fear” per se. Just think of it as a very usual and expected thing that is likely to happen such as boogers that we need to get rid off our nose, or challenges that we need to encounter. And just like any other boogers or challenges, fears are something we need to overcome.

But don’t get me wrong, similar to any other’s opinion on which comes first, an egg or a chicken, people have different perspective about fear. Just take this for example, during a bloodcurdling and hair-raising moment of a roller coaster ride, some people would say “Oh my gosh, I will never ever go back and try that thing again!” On the other hand, some people would exclaim “Wow, that was awesome! I want more!” There are people who do not like the experience of feeling afraid or taking the risk. While others find the rush of fear exciting, to the point that they might seek out the thrill of extreme sports or savor the scariest horror flicks. It was said that we need to overcome our fears, and we really have to. So if that’s the case, can we just reason out that the latter are perhaps courageous enough to be able to face and withstand what thrills them the most? Is courage the weapon you really need to beat your fears? Is courage the opposite of fear? The answer is no.

More often than not, we sometimes get the idea of courage being the opposite of fear. Well in fact, most of the courageous moments were done out of fear. Yes, there are some who treat fear negatively. However, there are some who see fear as their motivating fuel to break what hinders them from moving. We must also admit that we sometimes get the wrong notion of fear that is something unbearable, futile and worthless. Something that buries us underneath, well actually it is what that makes us strong and tough. Those adventurous people did not ride that roller coaster just because they were brave; it was because they were afraid that they might never ever get that experience, the experience which they could only get from riding that roller coaster. Alexander the Great did not defeat his enemies just because he was brave; it was because he was afraid that his enemies would get a hold of his extensive territory. Soldiers do not come to battle just because they are brave; it is because they are afraid that the terrorists might attack and assault our country. Dying people do not fight death just because they are brave; it is because they are afraid to die. Sometimes, most of the courageous moments were done out of fear. And for that matter, courage is not the opposite of fear. Courage is the product of fear.

So what is the opposite of fear? It is faith. It is the weapon we really need to beat and overcome our fears. It is what we are lacking, what we are longing, and what we are searching for. It is our medicine when we are paralyzed by our fears. It is our antidote when we are poisoned by our fears. It is our food when we are starved by our fears. It is what we have in the midst of conquering trials and miseries. Because we believe that at the end of the day, we will learn new lessons, we become tougher than before, we believe that there is a good God, who is sending these fear factors to us to finally make us realize and triumph over our weaknesses. He allows us to have our fears not to bury us six feet under, but to make us think that we need Him and we must have faith in Him. And It is very true that most of the courageous moments were done out of fear, and were done through faith. Faith in their comrades, faith in themselves and most importantly faith in God. Because faith, not courage, is what these brave people used to cancel out fear, for fear is the absence of faith. You are not going take the risk of plunging into the sea because you are brave; it is because you believe that you will float and buoyancy will prevent you from sinking. So don’t get too paralyzed over your fears, don’t get too paranoid. Do you know that 40% of our fears are totally unrealistic, impossible and fictitious? While 25% are possible but will not really going to happen. 18% are happening right now but we are not aware of. And what will only happen are the remaining 12%.Well, the only point here is that fear is only in our imagination. Maybe your lack of faith is making you believe in the things you should not believe in. Just remember that fear is not something you should be afraid of. Face them; take control of them through your faith, for faith is what keeps us moving and alive.

Mamma Mia is an adaptation of the book Mamma Mia by British playwright Catherine Johnson and the songs of ABBA. It has been turned into a movie and a stage musical, acquiring various awards and nominations in various parts of the globe.

Watching Mamma Mia is an experience worth remembering. With its fast-paced but comprehensible story, one can't help but be mesmerized. Its musical quality made it all the more unique and artistically superb. Scene after scene, you'll get captured and drawn into the story. Sophie's dream of discovering herself happened through her reckless actions and thoughtless decisions. Her mother, Donna, was the one who suffered but in the end everything got settled or rather, unsettled. A whirlwind story of love, hilarious antics, forgiving and acceptance, Mamma Mia is a masterpiece. Praise for all the cast and crew that made this movie possible.

After watching Mamma Mia, I have been lost in thought, relating Sophie's situation to mine. Though with differences, it is somehow parallel. But hers had a happy ending and I just wish that mine will, too.

Watch Mamma Mia! It's a film you shouldn't miss!

HOT, COOL, AND BEAUTIFUL

Men today are so into women. Everywhere you can see men hanging out with women or some, hanging out for women. Men’s taste is very different from each other. I for example like those who are hot and beautiful while others are satisfied with those pretty or ordinary women.

Aside from women, men are also into cars. Whether it’s sports, street, or rally cars, as long as its cool, hot, and fast, it will surely satisfy any man’s taste. One car that almost all men will surely admire is the Ferrari series. This hot and beautiful car can surely make your jaws drop. Aside from its beauty, it’s also a mean beast on the road. It can reach a maximum speed of almost 300 km/h on open roads.

Men too are very creative. When it comes to their cars, they too can apply “make-up”. If you have the money and the idea, dressing a car is not a big deal for you. Even if you own a junk, a 1960’s car for example, you can turn it into a meaner, hotter beast. Men love to dress their car- from the interior up to the exterior. The louder the sound system of your car, the more attractive it is. Just change some parts, and boom! You have yourself a hot and beautiful babe in your garage.

If I were to choose a car that I would customize, I’d choose the Skyline GT-R. Its Nissan’s top of the line sports car model. Its showroom model is already hot but if you changed the body kit a little and add some decals can make it even hotter. It can also reach an almost 300 km/h maximum speed which is almost like a Ferrari. Though the Ferrari is far hotter and cooler than the Skyline, the Skyline is a 4wd machine which you can bring anywhere with style and glamour.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR

One of the saddest, most tragic events that can befall a person is the loss of the one he loves. When a dear person leaves us, we often feel betrayed and cheated. We feel a profound gush of melancholy, eating up our hearts until a hole is left intact. We become indignant. that is why we do whatever it takes to not lose that person, to make that person stay, no matter the cost. But why do we do this only when we know that we are close to losing that loved one? When we know that we have almost reached the brink of loneliness?

Everyone is guilty of the fact that people tend to take the people important to them for granted. We always forget to give thanks to that person for being with us, because we think that loneliness can never get to us because we think that the person we hold dear to our hearts will never leave us. We take them for granted, not knowing that the very strength that we have, the strength we use to get by, emanates from that dear person whom we take ever so lightly. we do not realize that without them, we will crumble to pieces because we feel so alive, so strong, almost immortal, when we have them with us. but what we do not know is that the things we do are the things that will drive our loved ones away, all because we took them for granted.

What if a close friend were to suddenly move to a place far away without you bidding that friend goodbye? What if your mother or father were to suddenly leave eternally? What if the person you love were to suddenly pass away? Would you be able to tell yourself that they left knowing in their hearts that you appreciated them being there for you, and that you loved them so much? Would you be able to sleep at night with the confidence that the people you hold dear to your heart knew about your gratitude to them?

Cherish each moment that you spend with the people you love. Always let them know that you are thankful for them, because they serve as your strength and inspiration. Always tell them how much you love them, and mean it, so that they will always know, and they will always hold that sweet memory dear to their hearts and become ephemeral. Give them the love and attention that they so truly deserve. Love them, and let them know, before it is too late.

SPEAK OUT

“I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to death your right to say it.”

Do you try to keep your thoughts and ideas to yourself if those ideas appear to oppose those of others? Do you suppress the things you think of just because of a certain fear, a fear that maybe you’ll be treated differently just because you think differently? Well, you should not.

Everyone has the right to say what they feel or what they think. No one should be deprived of that right. Nor should anyone be afraid of what others might feel about their thoughts. Just because your ideas are not the same with others, it does not mean that you should not express them. No one should agree with the majority just because they are part of the minority. People should not be afraid to say what is on their mind.
We should not be afraid of being different from others. We should not be afraid of not being a part of the majority. People should not feel that they will not be normal if they disagree with the greater part of the population.

This has been a profound habit for many. People tend to keep to themselves what they think because it goes against what many think. And this is not a new case, because you can see it anywhere. The most common example is the homeroom elections in a classroom. You will often hear students say, “kung saan na lang madami” or “kung sino na lang ang lamang.” But it should not be like that. People have to exercise their right to express what is on their minds.

There are a few people that are brave enough to be called “different.” There are only a few who would say what they feel, even if they are outnumbered by people who hate dislike the idea. We should tolerate those people. We should not let ourselves be censored just because of our own cowardice. Express what you feel. Say what you want to say. Do not let yourself be a part of the spiral of silence that is slowly but surely growing. Let your thoughts be known. Because an idea, no matter how great, will be useless if nobody gets to hear it.

HOW DO I SEE MYSELF AS A PERSON

IV-Madame Marie Curie

A loving daughter… A compassionate sibling… A diligent student… A trustworthy friend… A holistic person… This is how I see myself. I am someone who confidently faces life’s challenges without any intention of giving up. Although, at times, weaknesses shatter my hope into a thousand small pieces, I am still able to find the real strength within me. With good judgment, I am able to discern the right path God has been leading me to. It is only He who I trust and turn to, especially during the darkest and dullest times of my life.

When it comes to education, I am that person who has always given it my top priority. I value it so much because I firmly believe that doing so will assure me of a bright future. I always perform well in our class because I want all the sacrifices and hard work of my parents to pay off. I do not want to disappoint them. I have that strong desire to make the people I love feel proud of my achievements.
I am someone who knows how to appreciate things, even the simplest ones. I am easily pleased and amused by silly and corny jokes. I enjoy having company because it makes me realize that I am loved and cared for. But, sometimes, I prefer to be alone so that I can have time to ponder on my countless thoughts. A period of silence gives my heart and mind the best kind of peace one can ever have.

I am someone who never forgets to thank God for all the great blessings he has continually showered upon me. My faith in Him is deep and strong that words can never be enough for me to express the power surrounding the tight bond between us.

I am someone who is sailing through the vast sea of life while fighting against its destructive waves. With the unpredictable flow of this journey, I have carried with me the precious values I learned through the years. Determination, perseverance, honesty, respect, trust, and love are the powerful defenses I possess. These shall undeniably take me to the place I have long sought for – a place where success has always reigned.

A true friend is not like an umbrella and jacket in rainy days nor a hat or fan in sunny days. It is like neither a book that will teach you a lesson nor a pen that can express yourself. It’s not like a cell phone that you will always have wherever you go. It is not like a joke that will make you smile or a mirror that reflects yourself. It functions not like a scientific calculator that will help you solve your problem. It is not like a handkerchief that will put away your tears or an eyeglass that will make things clearer. Yes, a true friend can be compared to any materials things but should not because materials things do fade but true friend does not.

True friend in Mathematics is constant because it will never change. In English, it is literature because it will always remain forever. It is oxygen in Science because no one can live without it.

But for a Roger Perez Turingan, a true friend is a person that will believe you even if you don’t explain yourself to his/her. It is non sense to explain to a fake friend because they will never trust you.

It is also wrong that when a person is not your enemy then he/she is your friend. A friend is worth a happy moment while a TRUE FRIEND is worth DYING FOR.

SMILES AND TEARS

As I looked at your picture, sudden sadness filled my heart. I looked away. I wanted to get away from anything that reminds me of you as far as possible. But then, I just couldn't resist so I looked back at that picture in which you were smiling. Involuntarily, my lips began to form a curve.

You looked so handsome in that picture. You sure got a face that can be boasted to everyone. That smile of yours can make anyone, sad or happy, smile. I yearned to hug you. But, I know that would be impossible. Even to hold your hand is impossible. The smile on my face faded as I thought of the things that can happen to us but will never happen. Tears filled my eyes. I began to cry.

These tears are just droplets of water coming out from the eyes. But once they fall, they begin to be a symbol. A symbol of loneliness, happiness, anger, fear, and pain. What do my tears mean? Am I lonely because I can never hold you in my arms? Am I happy because at least we're friends? Am I angry at myself because I keep hoping even if I know that there's no chance between us? Am I scared that I can never see you again? Or am I just in deep pain because of the fact that you will never love me?

I admit, it's really hard to talk to you. It is because I cannot say the things I really want to say. My lips want to utter the words “I love you”, but I know it is a foolish thing to do. So I just think of something else to say just so I can engage in even just a simple conversation with you. And those hi’s and hello’s coming from your lips never fail to make me smile.

You know what? My days light up when you flash that charming smile upon me. Chills run through my bones when you wave your hands and greet me with your sweetest voice. It’s as if you are speaking words of romance to me. My heart smiles with the thought that you noticed me. I don’t care what it is you say to me. I don’t care if you tease me. I don’t care if you just asked me a question. As long as you talk to me, you already make my day complete.

I began to smile again. I remembered the time when you said you liked me. I was flattered. But, I did not tell you then that I liked you, too. As time passed, you and I began to like somebody else. I even loved that somebody. Again, time passed. My heart came back to you. But yours didn't. I didn’t know I made the wrong choice not to tell you what I really feel. Once again, my smile was replaced with tears.

How long will I have to pretend that I’m happy even when I’m not? I am really in a hard time right now. I don’t want to laugh anymore even if my heart is crying inside. I don’t want to look at him and pretend that everything’s alright when nothing’s going right. I don’t want to see his smiles and know that I am not the one who’s behind his happiness. I may make him smile by making a joke but it will still hurt because it’s not his heart that’s smiling. And I could do nothing more than that.

Now, I'm crying in front of your picture. I'm not pretending anymore, right? You can see now the pain that I always brought with me. You can see now how much I want you, need you… how much I love you.

So now, I'll bid goodbye to the only one I've ever wanted. This may be hard but I know I can do it. I don't want to hurt myself anymore. But, I won't rip your photo into pieces. The photo I am holding now will well serve as a memory and a love that I once had but never returned.

I know that someday, I’ll be able to love somebody else. And I hope I will experience the love I’ve always wanted. But for now, I’ll just continue to love you. I’ll love you until I learn how to break free from the prison I’ve been in since I met you. This time, I know I am not making the same mistake by not telling you how I feel. Am I?

As I put your picture down and lie down the bed, I wiped my tears and smiled. Because I'll be dreaming about you again. In my dreams, we are always together not just as friends but as lovers. There, you nor I will never say goodbye. And there will only be smiles and tears… of joy.

CHOTTO MATTE KUDASAI

Chotto Matte Kudasai. I wish all of you could understand that phrase. If only I have the powers to slow down time, I would have done it already. If only time won’t spill like water on a sponge, I would have done it a long, long time ago.

I still rememember how confused I was when I entered Makati Science High School. Now, I’m one of those who’ll graduate this year. Gee, time really flies, and fast. I never thought I would be able to survive all those life-threatening projects, sleepless nights, and lunch breaks with no lunch. Funny as it seems, but that’s really true.

“Kung nakayananan ko ang isang buwan, kaya ko rin ang buong quarter. Kung nakayanan ko ang isang quarter, malamang kakayanin ko ang isang taon.” I said when I survived my first month, which I think helped me get throughout the years.

Little by little, I learned to appreciate MakSci, not as student or scholar, but as my second home. I learned to talk and speak for myself when I have to, especially when I have a point. I learned to be resourceful, specifically when the props in the play got lost. I learned the value of teamwork and friendship, especially in those critical times. I learned sportsmanship. I learned the value of sleep, especially when I have to. More importantly, I learned that there’s more to knowledge, and that’s wisdom.

Though I can’t write everything here I know that I’ll miss everything here. From the classrooms up to the gates, I learned something that I’ll keep close to my heart. Maybe time would erase all the things I know and cherish here in Makati Science High School, but one thing’s for sure, I’m your friend, you’ll always be my friend. And the joy, the laughter, the tears and memories we’ve shared will always be a part of me.

Chotto matte kudasai is a Japanese phrase than means please wait.

PERHAPS

UNEDITED SAMPLE LITERARY ARTICLE
By Erine Emmanuelle Cawaling Hetrosa
IV-Sir Isaac Newton

Perhaps, there would come a time that I would no longer care to see your face and it would cease to exist even in my nightly dreams. Perhaps, there would be a moment when all my tears would dry up and stream down my face no more. Perhaps, there would be a point in time wherein all this constricting pain inside me would sink into oblivion, forever forgotten in the midst of darkness and nothingness.

The rain is falling outside, showering life all over the place. I leaned against the window sill and viewed the scenery as it unfolds before me. The constant, steady fall of the raindrops are tapping against the windowpane, breaking the stillness of the night. The familiar sounds of the night are absent while the contact of the drops with the glass creates a soothing aura, hypnotic even.

For a minute, I was standing. But then, the next minute, I was already sitting, my arms folded on the counter, my head nestled on my arms. How am I able to do things without myself knowing them?

As I look again outside, everything is in a hazy, blurry image, for the rain interferes with my vision. But I do not care. I do not even notice that much. The depths of my mind are in much more chaos than the outside. How am I supposed to care? How am I supposed to notice?

"I’d love to make you mine. ‘Cause it’s the only way to hold you in my wild imagination."

Your face, your voice, your whole being is traversing through the subconscious level of my mind, dangerously treading towards the main frame, trying to let itself out. I struggled to let myself loose from the thoughts of you. An invisible glass barrier set in place just to protect me from your memories keeps on pushing those unwanted reminiscences away. A clash was on the way, but the glass was already shattered… and I was lost.

I am transporting myself yet again to another world, a world where there is only you and me, a world where you are mine and mine alone. But that world does not exist, and most probably, never will.

I’ve been living a stupid lie. A lie that I have to put up for our friendship’s sake. A lie which, even I, myself have led to believe, or rather, I have been trying to convince myself to believe. Still struggling with the endeavor of trying to mask my feelings and clouding the verity, I keep on telling myself that I don’t love you, that you are just a friend. Just A Friend.

A sudden paroxysm shot through my heart to its very core, twisting its way deeper within, rendering me helpless, vulnerable, weak,

For a moment there, I thought that the rain had gotten closer. I shut my eyes and I felt the tears rushing down face. It was not the rain. Those were my tears which welled up beneath my lids and now falling freely, uncontrollably. But I know that even if I cry endlessly, this stabbing pain inside me will not go away. I cry, not to let the sadness go, for it never will. I cry because it is all I could do, I cry because there was nothing else I could do.

"I wish that you were here ‘cause its illusions everytime you’re close to me and sing me love songs."

Still in the middle of my reverie, I imagine you here with me. Your voice fills my soul, endlessly soothing in its repose, forever sweet in its harmonic symphony, bringing light to darkness that was brought to life by me. Light then darkness. Light for I strive to hear your voice amidst my tears, darkness for the bitter truth cannot be shunned, that your voice is not really there, that it is just a figment of my cruel imagination.

Your image fills my mind, your smiling countenance casting a ray of light upon my dimmest hour of solace. As soon as that faint light appeared, it was as quickly lost. And once again, I am slumped into nothingness and solitude.

It is still raining. I am still crying. How long will it still be? Until when will I immerse myself in the same kind of hurt over and over again? When will this folly end?

I snapped back from my trance, angrily wiping the remains of my foolishness, those unbidden tears of accepting bitter reality. I stood up, edged myself from the window and slumped down the couch. The tapping of the raindrops seemed so remote. I turned the radio on, hoping that some music would appease and tranquil my depressed nerves.

"Just give it a try, though I’m like chasing rainbows in the sky. I want to hold you in my dreams and make-believe that it’s true. Although I know, I know that it’s impossible to do. ‘Cause you’re a star, people love you as you are. You’re a million miles away from me."

I tried my best not to hurl the radio away. As once again tears continue to stream down my face, I promised myself that this would be their last fall.

Perhaps, I could soon forget you. Perhaps, I will be able to look upon your face and not have the same old feeling of bitterness inside. Perhaps, I will not love you anymore. But then again, perhaps is just perhaps… uncertain, unsure, unknown. Just perhaps

GOALS FOR SUCCESS

UNEDITED SAMPLE LITERARY ARTICLE
By Lavinia Lyka Lim Lopez
IV-Michael Faraday

Should every person have a goal in life? Before I answer that question, I will define first the word goal. According to the site Goal Setting 4 Success, “A goal is a specific, measurable occurrence, object, or accomplishment that a person would like to achieve, or obtain in the future. One where a person develops concrete action plans to take him to where and what he wants in his future. A goal statement is an investment in yourself; it clearly identifies what you want, how you will get it, and when you will get it.”. Does that clearly answer my question?

Goals are very essential. Without goals in life, a person would be lost in this vast world. Without goals in life, a person would live without meaning. As Catherine Pulsifer said, "Goals give you a compass in order to direct your path through life. Goals focus your thoughts and actions on areas that have precise purpose and meaning.”.

Aim high. The capacity of humans is immeasurable. There is no limit to our success. Humans are rocket ships that soar not only to the sky but to the infinite universe. If you will exert effort and put your time to your goals, why not aim high? Surely you don’t want your struggles and used up irreplaceable time to have a fruit with a size of a peanut.

Nothing is easy in this world. Achieving your goals follows to that statement. Being successful requires diligence, patience, self-possession, and unlimited faith in God. There would always be impediments that would hinder us from reaching our goals especially when our goals are very great and require a long span of time. We should learn to handle obstacles in life because God wouldn’t give us those stumbling blocks if we cannot deal with them. We should have unlimited faith in Him. We should never give up in reaching our goals because even though the path towards success is most of the time bitter, triumph will be totally sweet.

Setting goals would mean that there is a possibility for you to be successful in life. Without goals in life, you would be a total failure. Let’s say a student does not set goals for himself. If that student doesn’t have goals in life, his chance of being the valedictorian would be thin.

After reading this article, thoughts would be forming in your mind now that’s for sure. You would now be thinking about what your goals in life should be. Just remember all the things I have said. Don’t worry about reaching your goals because all goals are attainable. Nothing is impossible in this world. The world is full of possibilities. You can do whatever you want if you are determined. Goals are just waiting to be grasped so just aim high, work hard, persevere, and believe in God and nothing can possibly go wrong.
