SPAIN TAKES WORLD CUP HOME

After 44 years of long wait for their first major football trophy, Spain came home with the bacon after defeating Germany in this year’s World Cup.

Aboard an open top bus, the champions sang Queen’s “We Are the Champions” while gathered around captain Iker Casillas after coach Luis Aragones hoisted in the air for several times.

“This cup is yours, one man who got us where we are today, Luis Aragones,” Casillas screamed to the crowd as he turned to his coach.

Everyone was overcome by emotions, even the melancholic coach, as they sang one of their theme songs since the 2006 World Cup, “A Por Ellos” (“Let Us Go Get Them”).

“If I could not manage the quality of the players we have, then it would be impossible to win the Euro. Why? Because we have the best team in the world”, the 69-year old coach said as he pleased the members to remain as he resigns.

Pepe Reina, the Liverpool goalkeeper, began the official celebrations with a resume of each of the 23 players before surrendering the microphone.

“Without you guys, we would not have been able to win this,” said Fernando Torres, the striker whose 33rd-minute goal delivered a 1-0 win for Spain.

An honor was given to Genaro Borras, a longtime team doctor who passed away shortly before the start of Euro 2008, by unfurling a banner. Manolo Escobar, a Spanish singer, then eventually emerged to lead a live version of “Vive EspaƱa” (“Long Live Spain”).

Traffic ground to a halt as the bus crawled into the capital.
