Sun Microsystems is urging Filipino software programmers to seriously look into the opportunities of becoming entrepreneurs, saying that business opportunities abound, particularly in the global market.

This idea came up at the recently held Sun Tech Days 2008 in Manila, attended by some 1,500 local programmers and developers.

Aisling MacRunnels, vice president for software marketing at Sun said that there has been unprecedented increase in the usage and awareness of Java and open source, thus, “opening up” opportunities for local software graduates and professionals.

"It is not a far-fetched idea that one day, a Filipino software developer will create or develop the next Google," Aisling said.

Aside from professionals, the executive further cited the number of Filipino students that are currently exposed to these open source tools through several partnerships that the Sun Philippine office has signed with leading Philippine schools. Meaning, more Filipino students are aware and exposed to programming, as schools realize the value of information and technology integration in their curriculum vitae.

With the increasing demand for software “architects”, the idea of having it as a capital for your own development is not impossible, especially since Java and Open source has not yet reached “business level” development in the country.
